Interview conducted by Héctor Hernández Lizarralde, Director of the magazine Vivir Triunfando. We congratulate the Rogart photography studio for their excellent work in photography.

Excellent day Karen, it is a pleasure to share this interview with you.

The pleasure is all mine, it is always a pleasure to share a few words and moments with you friend.

1. In your own words, who is Karen Koch Ferrer?

Karen is a versatile woman, full of many qualities and dreams, some of which have become successes and others waiting to be fulfilled. A girl who, despite her difficult times and adversities, always looks for a way to continue for her family and for herself; a person who recognizes her mistakes and seeks to solve them. A very restless woman, who is always involved in activities in favor of the inclusion of people with disabilities, I really enjoy my profession, receiving a smile and gratitude from my patients for having obtained favorable results with their treatment; and I also really enjoy the tranquility accompanied by a good book or a movie. I am a woman who has no limits when I do things with passion and love and especially when she can help others.

2 In your opinion, what are the most important issues that Mexico must resolve regarding women with disabilities?

I believe that this question has an answer that has no end, but, in short: In Mexico we have a huge lack of inclusion, despite the fact that some government institutions such as private and educational, have become increasingly aware of this issue and have generated some empathy for this social sector, there are still many shortcomings, speaking for all the people who find ourselves in a situation of disability; but speaking specifically of women with disabilities is even more complicated, since in general women have always been marginalized only because of their gender, but if we add disability to gender we are talking about a double marginalization, since they have fewer opportunities for economic development , educational, and labor, than a man with a disability. I believe that the most important issue to be resolved would be to break with that stereotype and erroneous thought that you feel towards women with disabilities, so that this allows the generation of real job opportunities and therefore sustainable economic development for them and their families; educational opportunities for their professional development without any type of impediment; and respect for their rights and guarantees, as well as access to health, especially for mothers. Only then can we speak of equal treatment between men and women. educational opportunities for their professional development without any type of impediment; and respect for their rights and guarantees, as well as access to health, especially for mothers. Only then can we speak of equal treatment between men and women. educational opportunities for their professional development without any type of impediment; and respect for their rights and guarantees, as well as access to health, especially for mothers. Only then can we speak of equal treatment between men and women.

3 What does the phrase “female empowerment” represent for you?

See women fulfilled outside of what socially means the "realization" in a woman, strengthened in their capacities and virtues. Tenacious women who make a real change for the benefit of their person and mainly for their community and who are a true example.

4 You are originally from Tuxtla Gutiérrez Chiapas, in your opinion, what are the most significant pending issues in your state in terms of inclusion, fight against discrimination and accessibility?

Well, speaking of the inclusion of people with disabilities in general, there are many pending issues that still need to be covered: One of them would be to create a better educational system so that it is truly inclusive for all people.

Create more employment opportunities for people with disabilities, whether in government or private institutions, so that people with disabilities have true economic development and thus can provide sustainability to their families, as well as generate better access to health by improving care measures both in infrastructure and in health and administrative personnel for people who are in a situation of disability.

Generate more support for adapted sports with sports centers suited to the needs of athletes with disabilities. Study the needs that each disability has in order to implement architectural accessibility in cities as well as generate more accessible means of transport.

At the end of the journey, everything also leads us to the creation of new public policies in favor of this social sector, but mainly to activate them; and all this will lead us to equitable treatment where there will be no social differences, that the same people who make up a community can generate more empathy with respect to the inclusion of this sector, and that we begin to see disability as only a physical limitation and nothing more.

5 Do you think that the world in general has provided enough protection to people with disabilities during the pandemic?

Perhaps in other countries there could have been a difference regarding preventive and care measures regarding the pandemic, but if I am talking about Mexico, no, I really think they had a good intention, taking into account the social sector, but They have not really been the most appropriate measures, because they forget that despite having a disability, that never limits the independence of the same person.

For the most part, people with disabilities live and support themselves, or in this case they are in charge of providing for the family, so why not first think about studying the case and the situation well and generating true prevention and care measures for people with disabilities so that they can continue to be productive economically and in their lives in general.

Because although you could see they were very limiting measures with which we were not allowed access to shopping malls and institutions where most payments are usually made, as well as processes of some procedures.

Why limit and why not think about truly preventing contagion, while guaranteeing safety in daily activities outside the home?

Because limiting access and performance in some activities, but in the labor aspect there was no type of support or consideration regarding people with disabilities infected by Covid-19, many people were fired due to the "vulnerability" that their physical condition implied. , when they must have thought about generating work strategies to continue supporting these people to keep their jobs.

I feel that there was not much consistency with the measures that were applied since the beginning of the pandemic, but hopefully at some point they can redesign them to have a better strategy for the future, if it becomes necessary.

6- Unfortunately, Mexico has a high rate of femicides, missing persons and other types of manifestations of violence against women. In your opinion, what are we failing as a country so that these events continue to occur constantly?

First of all, in the security system: unfortunately, insecurity continues to grow in Mexico, and few actions are carried out with respect to the protection of the population. Secondly, in continuing to minimize gender, since women continue to be an ignored, marginalized person whose rights and guarantees are not respected, and therefore their credibility continues to be evaded by the authorities, who are the spokespersons and protectors of the people, as well as by society in general.

7 During the month of October you will represent Mexico in the Second Edition of Miss Wheelchair World. What does this opportunity mean to you and what are the values that as a Mexican you want to transmit to the world?

It is an opportunity that I have been working with great pride with my preparation, to be able to raise the name of my Mexican country. It is an honor for me to be able to represent Mexican women, and to be a spokesperson for my social sector so that we are increasingly visible and heard by all. I want the world to appreciate what Mexico is made of, to see that my country is characterized by its simple and colorful traditions and customs, by its vast culture, and by the honesty, strength and love that its people have to offer to anyone who likes to get to know our Mexican country

8 Does the fact that our country hosts this international event represent a special responsibility for you?

Of course! I have the responsibility to play a good role, at the height of an event of this stature, so that the name of Mexico stands tall and we can feel proud.

9 What message would you give to the business community and the media regarding the holding of this event?

That they give themselves the opportunity to learn about this project whose main objective is the visibility of women with disabilities, as well as teaching society that a physical limitation does not prevent you from achieving your dreams and goals, that there are many women who are examples of perseverance, beauty and love for her community. That it is time to break with all those paradigms that exist in society regarding people with disabilities, that the time has come to be inclusive and support this project that brings a flag for which it has been fighting for many years.

10 We have the legacy of Karen Pamela Rocha, the first Mexican to participate in Miss Wheelchair World in 2017. What does it mean to you to be able to learn from her experience?

I believe that Karen Rocha has been an example of tenacity, integrity and empowerment in the face of so many situations that she has had to live with as a woman with a disability or as an entrepreneur, but that thanks to those values and her personality she has been able to successfully overcome. She is a woman who, despite her career, never forgets the simplicity and humility that characterizes her, that is something that I like about her and for which I admire her, among many other things that I could talk about. I have always been a faithful believer that being yourself is something that we must preserve, project and grow every day, to always have a better version of ourselves, and that version is useful to help those who need it and to improve. our environment for the benefit of all.

I think that both Karen and I are looking for that, that is why I can say that I get a good taste in my mouth for taking a little of what is her essence and her experience, to be able to apply a joint work with her in the future, and that at some point she knows that there is another Mexican in the south, with whom she can always count on in the future.

11 What message do you give to your loved ones regarding your participation in Miss Wheelchair World?

There are so many mixed feelings on this occasion, all this time it has come to my mind that 3 years ago I was on a similar journey, with the company of the most important people in my life, and only with those 3 unique people could we celebrate.

Today I know that one of them leaves a void in me that perhaps I will never fill with anything, more than with those memories and desires that he had for me; I know that even though my father is not physically present, he accompanies me in spirit, and I will continue to see that club of 3 loves that have always been with me wherever I go, supporting my madness and adventures. An honest and kind man, full of jokes and sayings, from whom I learned so much and for whom I never lacked anything, mainly a great unconditional love.

Thank God I have my mother, a woman from whom I have learned to be tenacious when required and who, despite her integrity and firmness, always never leaves aside her sweetness and shelter for the people she loves. I thank my parents because from them I learned to be persistent and get where I want, without losing my essence, because when I'm deep, they always save me and remind me who I am. I have always told you, and this will not be the exception, I have always been proud of the parents that God gave me, and they will always be proud of the woman they raised.

My cousin who without asking always supports me in everything I think and do, who always has love and patience to give.

To all my family and friends, endless thanks to each of you for your support and love, because this will also be possible thanks to all the grains of sand that each one of you has contributed, and whatever the result, we will give everything for it. everything, that I will always thank you for all the love you give me and that I hope you feel proud of this your servant who will continue working so that we all have the same opportunities.

12 Any message from the girls who, like you, will be participating in the Second Edition of Miss Wheelchair World?

I really hope and wish that they can have a beautiful experience both from the contest and from my Mexican country, but above all and mainly with the coexistence that we will have, that a beautiful friendship is born from it. That not only stereotypes be broken but also distances between us so that we keep in mind that we can always count on the friendship of each one of us. Let them not forget that with their trajectory traveled each one in their native country, plus the efforts and commitment they have put in to be able to be in Mexico participating and teaching society what truly is a FEMALE EMPOWERMENT, A WOMAN, from all that, They are already winners.

13 Do you dream of the crown? What would it mean for you to obtain it and what responsibility would it bring?

I dream of being able to make a real change for my society, for the benefit of the Disabled Persons sector, that we begin to be truly heard by the authorities who are the spokespersons of the people. That we truly activate the rights and public policies in favor of this social sector, that job, educational, and sports opportunities be activated and that we begin to normalize architectural accessibility.

That they stop seeing what is necessary as unnecessary and with all the importance that this implies. That society in general learns and re-educates itself regarding what disability and inclusion really is, that we generate more empathy for all of us who make up society. I believe that being able to carry out one of these actions, representing the community and being its spokesperson, is an honor and a great responsibility in which the true objective and message of inclusion should never be lost sight of. of Persons with Disabilities.

The fact of already being a participant with a good objective can open many doors to generate real changes; That's what I think. real changes; That's what I think.

14 Your participation in this event could be a source of inspiration for many girls with disabilities in Mexico. What advice would you offer to Mexican children?

That they always pursue their dreams and desires, that despite the fact that sometimes there may be problems in life, everything is temporary, and that is an advantage, because it means that it will disappear and we will be able to continue with much more maturity, experience and Wisdom our way, whether walking or rolling. May they always live to their liking and desires, may they get rid of their fears, and that also goes for fathers, mothers and family in general, may their sons and daughters always know that you will be their impetus to be able to do what they want for the benefit of your life, and if you, boys and girls, have that drive from them, bad experiences will always be bearable, but never let fear stop you, let no one tell you that you can't do things, because you can always To the best of your ability, always remember that the opinions of others are independent of your abilities and will.

May they always be proud of who they are.
