Entrevista con Karen Rocha Directora Internacional de Miss Wheelchair World 

 Karen ¿Cómo estás?, Un placer compartir contigo esta entrevista para la Revista Digital Vivir Triunfando.

 ¡Hola! Héctor. Agradecida una vez más por el espacio que nos brindas para compartir con todas las personas esta bonita iniciativa llamada Miss wheelchair World, que nació en Europa y hoy está en nuestro país. 

Hoy es una fecha icónica alrededor del mundo, 8 de marzo Día Internacional de la Mujer... 

1 ¿Qué significado tiene para ti esta fecha? 

Para mí el día de la mujer significa mucho ya que nos ha ayudado para sensibilizar a la población, gobiernos y Estados sobre la existencia de problemas que atentan contra los derechos de las mujeres y que aún necesitan ser resueltos. Gracias a esta fecha tan importante se reconocen las contribuciones de las mujeres en distintas áreas como lo son investigación, la innovación, destruir los estereotipos y erradicar la discriminación contra las mujeres. En el marco del Día Internacional de la Mujer alrededor del mundo millones de mujeres acostumbran a realizar diversas marchas feministas. 

2 ¿Qué mensaje le ofrecerías a todas ellas? 

Me solidarizo, sabemos que, durante casi toda la historia, la mujer ha ocupado un papel secundario en términos sociales y políticos, y ha sufrido la violencia y la falta de respeto de sus derechos fundamentales. Este es, sin duda, el inicio de tal movimiento. El feminismo en todo el mundo ha luchado por conseguir los derechos que las mujeres tienen en la actualidad. Las marchas y protestas de nuestras antecesoras han sido fundamentales para lograr la transformación social que hoy vivimos. Sin embargo, aún queda mucho camino por recorrer, pues el dolor que se sufre a causa de los feminicidios y la impunidad es hoy en día una urgencia nacional que se tiene que atender inmediatamente. 

En México, gracias a la iniciativa de la hoy Diputada Federal Norma Aceves García se declaró el 12 de septiembre como Día de la Mujer con Discapacidad, en tu opinión... 

3 ¿Cuáles son los pendientes más grandes que nuestro país debe resolver en favor de las mujeres con discapacidad?

 Siguen existiendo pendientes en cuanto a igualdad y oportunidades en muchas áreas para Las mujeres con discapacidad ya que nos encontramos en una situación de mayor vulnerabilidad por las múltiples discriminaciones que sufrimos por su género y por discapacidad. Tenemos una menor participación política y un menor acceso al empleo que los hombres con discapacidad, además de sufrir violencia de género y abusos en un mayor porcentaje que otras mujeres. Para luchar contra esta situación es necesario empoderar a estas mujeres para que conozcan sus derechos. Es necesario garantizar un acceso equitativo a los servicios de salud; implementar políticas públicas de empleo que tengan presente la igualdad de las mujeres por razón de género y de discapacidad; que se reconozca públicamente las violaciones de derechos humanos que han sufrido en nuestro país miles de niñas y mujeres con discapacidad. 

4 En tu opinión... ¿Qué podemos entender por empoderamiento femenino? 

El empoderamiento lo entiendo como la capacidad de la mujer para incrementar su autoconfianza, el poder y la autoridad para poder decidir libremente en todos los aspectos que afectan a su vida. La forma de lograrlo es a través del desarrollo de sus capacidades, ofreciéndole el apoyo necesario para trazar su itinerario de vida a través del ejercicio y defensa de sus derechos y la promoción de su autonomía e independencia hasta que lo logren. 

5 ¿Consideras que en México y el mundo se cumplen cabalmente los artículos de la Convención Internacional de los Derechos de las Personas con Discapacidad? 

No podemos hacer invisible lo visible, no sólo se violenta el goce pleno de los derechos humanos de las personas, también limita la movilidad social de los grupos vulnerables. en el país no son y no han sido una prioridad estatal estos temas. Aun no se logra garantizar que las personas con discapacidad puedan vivir de manera independiente y ser incluidas en la sociedad. Nuestra realidad es que México sigue siendo un país inaccesible, sin unificación de criterios de acceso a establecimientos públicos y privados y acceso pleno al transporte público. La mayoría de las recomendaciones de la ONU al gobierno mexicano siguen sin atenderse. 

Repasando tu trayectoria, en el año 2017 representaste con mucho amor a nuestro país en la primera edición Miss Wheelchair World, certamen internacional de belleza para mujeres usuarias de silla de rueda, sin lugar a dudas marcaste un camino y tu legado ha generado respeto y orgullo en muchas personas... 

6 ¿Qué mensaje le brindarías a una niña con discapacidad que mire en ti un modelo aspiracional? 

Sin duda mi representación en este evento me dejo con una gran responsabilidad social y para mí es un orgullo que puedan verme de esa manera. A medida que comiences a convertirte en una inspiración, tienes que ser más valiente y tratar de desafiarte de alguna manera todos los días. 

La verdad es que nadie se sentirá inspirado por una persona pesimista, sin aspiraciones de ser mejor cada dia, pero sí por una persona que tenga una visión positiva de las cosas y tenga buenas virtudes como confianza e integridad. Y esto no quiere decir que no tenga días o malos ratos y todo lo vea color de rosa. La vida no viene con instructivo de como tenemos que vivirla, pero si depende de cada uno hacia donde queremos llevar nuestro destino. 

Con el paso del tiempo, la organización de Miss Wheelchair World se ha fijado en ti para que seas la Directora Internacional de la institución y por ende, ser la persona que encabeza la organización de la segunda edición a celebrarse en Rosarito Baja California durante el mes de octubre del presente 2022... 

7 ¿Que puede esperar el mundo entero de México como país sede? ¡Platícanos sobre Rosarito Baja California!

 Estoy muy agradecida por la confianza en mi persona para encabezar este hermoso proyecto del cual yo Salí seleccionada en 2017 para representar a mi país. Que te puedo decir de México, es un país de gente cálida, alegre, amable, es un país rico culturalmente. Muy contenta de que mi estado Baja California, sea parte de este maravilloso evento y este abriendo las puertas a tan prestigioso evento. ¡La cuidad de Rosarito y Tijuana serán parte de la llegada de 26  mujeres de distintos países y hay mucho que ofrecer! como Baja californiana me orgullece decir que existe una gran riqueza étnica, misional, culinaria, cívica y turística en mi estado que merece ser conocida y reconocida por muchas personas de otros países. 

Además de los atractivos naturales que no podemos dejar de lado, y que gracias a ello hace que cada vez más reciban una numerosa cantidad de visitantes extranjeros y locales. 

8 ¿Cuáles son los principales valores de Miss Wheelchair World? 

Ahora sí que todos los aspectos positivos que nos permiten convivir con otras personas de un modo justo con el fin de alcanzar un beneficio global como sociedad como lo es la Amistad, responsabilidad, humildad, empatía, gratitud y solidaridad entre muchos. 

9 Platícanos sobre las condiciones de accesibilidad que se cuenten en los diferentes escenarios que formaran parte de la Segunda Edición de Miss Wheelchair World, tales como el Hotel Rosarito Beach y el Baja Center sede de la gala final. 

Bueno pues no ha sido un trabajo nada sencillo la búsqueda de la accesibilidad en mi estado, traer un evento sede donde lo que buscamos es brindar la comodidad y promocionar también el turismo accesible. Sabemos que muchos países en Latinoamérica nos enfrentamos a la realidad de la infraestructura en pésimas condiciones. Sin duda hemos tratado de buscar lo más accesible para realizar este evento. Baja center te puedo decir que este centro metropolitano me sorprendió es totalmente accesible en todo sentido, desde baños, rampas, elevadores y estacionamientos. 

En el caso del hotel siempre muy amables, una vista espectacular frente al mar y la realidad es que no todas las habitaciones son accesibles como lo es en la mayoría de los hoteles en el país, regularmente se encuentran solo unas cuantas habitaciones contempladas para personas con discapacidad, y es como en muchos lugares públicos. 

 Muy agradecidos por el interés de crear las adecuaciones necesarias en el entorno para recibir a nuestras candidatas. Están en la mejor disposición de ser parte de este gran evento que dejara huella y sobre todo están dispuestos a fomentar y ser parte del turismo incluyente en Baja California. Además, muy contenta del recibimiento y apoyo de distintos institutos para la realización del evento próximo a realizarse en octubre del 2022. 

El pasado 3 de diciembre Día Internacional de la Mujer se dieron a conocer mediante las plataformas oficiales del evento a las 26 chicas que formarán parte de esta segunda edición... 

10 ¡Platícanos un poco de ellas! ¿Qué mensaje les brindas a todas ellas? 

En verdad que estoy muy contenta de esa actitud, seguridad y empatía que irradian cada una de ellas. ¡Son mujeres ejemplares!

 El mensaje que puedo brindarles es que disfruten cada etapa que estén realizando para lograr su objetivo ya que cada una portara y representara los colores de su bandera y eso debe de ser un orgullo para cada persona que pisa escenario en un evento internacional. Además de que se llevaran la amistad y el aprecio de sus compañeras, créanme nada compensa eso. 

Deseo que se lleven una increíble experiencia de mi país y que estén felices de estar en este evento. Sé que cada una de ellas se llevara una gran misión de seguir trabajando en pro de la inclusión, fomentar los derechos humanos para forjar futuras generaciones de mujeres más fuertes tanto física y como mentalmente. 

11 Sobre las actividades a realizarse en esta segunda edición

 ¿Que nos puedes compartir al respecto? 

Se estarán realizando distintas actividades donde se estarán evaluando a las chicas durante la semana, tendremos eventos culturales, moda y el ensayo para la gala final. 

12 ¿Habrá un comité o jurado calificador? de ser así, ¿Cuáles serán los parámetros a seguir para elegir a la chica ganadora? 

Sin duda alguna serán varios parámetros los que definirán a la finalista, ya que se busca a una mujer que pueda ser la portavoz de todas las mujeres con discapacidad, va de la mano la seguridad, tener un buen desenvolvimiento de comunicación, ser conocedora de sus derechos, ser empática, y sobre todo responsable. 

Definitivamente el jurado calificador tendrá una decisión difícil ya que todas las chicas son maravillosas, pero estoy segura de que estarán felices por los resultados y se alegraran de los logros de cada una y la finalista tendrá el apoyo de todas. 

Si hacemos una retrospectiva a la primera edición de Varsovia 2017, muchas de las chicas participantes trascendieron de manera significativa en el mundo de la moda, el activismo, el deporte, filantropía, medios de comunicación y la defensoría de los derechos humanos... 

14 Cómo ha sido la respuesta de los medios de comunicación de cara a la Segunda Edición de Miss Wheelchair World?

 Te puedo decir que vamos muy bien, en cuanto conocen el proyecto se entusiasman y desean colaborar. Aunque apenas vamos empezando en cuanto a la difusión en medios ya que hemos estado colaborando con distintos países y revistas. Ustedes como medios de comunicación son quienes nos ayudaran a darle proyección y también marcar un nuevo precedente sobre lo que es la inclusión hacia la mujer con discapacidad a nivel mundial. 

A lo largo de la pandemia, instituciones como Fundación Once y la propia Organización Mundial de Turismo han señalado que la inclusión debe ser un valor y aprendizaje en el turismo alrededor del mundo... 

15 ¿Qué mensaje le brindarías a la comunidad empresarial de México? 

¡Es una excelente oportunidad para patrocinar un evento de talla internacional con altísimo sentido de responsabilidad social! 

Si, Héctor, definitivamente es una gran oportunidad para que se sumen a este gran proyecto empresas mexicanas como de otros países. Algo muy importante es destacar las empresas que son comprometidas en apoyar e incluso dar empleo a personas con discapacidad. Su marca estará presente en ese día. además, déjame decirte que cada vez más existen empresas con una gran sensibilidad de apoyo hacia este sector tan vulnerado como lo es hoy en día laboralmente. 

Curiosamente a muchos empresarios les da miedo contratar a personas con alguna discapacidad por ciertos estereotipos sociales etc. Pero créeme que una vez contratándolos saben el valor de apoyar a alguien que ha batallado tanto para lograr obtener un trabajo y la misma persona lo valora tanto que da lo mejor de ella para ser un excelente trabajador. 

En cuanto a las precauciones entorno a la pandemia y sus variantes... 

16 ¿Cuáles son las medidas sanitarias que se tomarán durante el desarrollo de la Segunda Edición? (Hotel, Baja Center, tu staff de colaboradores, las propias chicas participantes)

 Las medidas que deben tener en cada evento que se realiza hoy en día, ahora sí que es acatar las ordenes que se estén implementando según el semáforo que este en el momento. En cuanto a Baja center, hotel Rosarito sabemos que ya llevan tiempo realizando eventos con gran éxito, incluso a raíz de la pandemia. Hay personas muy capacitadas en el staff que llevaran a cabo las medidas preventivas para cuidarnos todos. 

17 ¿Cuál ha sido la respuesta de las autoridades locales? 

Ha sido excelente, están muy emocionados de este evento internacional y y sobre todo lo que queremos proyectar a través de este. Próximamente ustedes van a ver que institutos están sumándose al proyecto y que medios de comunicación serán parte de esta segunda edición. 

Que estoy segura dejara un gran mensaje alentador para todas las personas que están atravesando por momentos difíciles en su vida. Para el público en general interesado en seguir las actividades de la Segunda Edición de Miss Wheelchair World...

 Karen, how are you? A pleasure to share with you this interview for the Digital Magazine Vivir Triunfando.

 Hello! Hector. Grateful once again for the space you give us to share with everyone this beautiful initiative called Miss wheelchair World, which was born in Europe and is now in our country. 

Today is an iconic date around the world, March 8 International Women's Day... 

1 What meaning does this date have for you? 

For me, Women's Day means a lot since it has helped us to make the population, governments and States aware of the existence of problems that threaten women's rights and that still need to be resolved. Thanks to this important date, the contributions of women are recognized in different areas such as research, innovation, destroying stereotypes and eradicating discrimination against women. Within the framework of International Women's Day around the world, millions of women tend to carry out various feminist marches. 

2 What message would you offer to all of them? 

I sympathize, we know that, for almost all of history, women have played a secondary role in social and political terms, and have suffered violence and lack of respect for their fundamental rights. This is, without a doubt, the beginning of such a movement. Feminism throughout the world has fought to achieve the rights that women have today. The marches and protests of our predecessors have been essential to achieve the social transformation that we are experiencing today. However, there is still a long way to go, since the pain suffered due to femicides and impunity is today a national emergency that must be addressed immediately. 

In Mexico, thanks to the initiative of today Federal Deputy Norma Aceves García, September 12 was declared as the Day of Women with Disabilities, in your opinion... 

3 What are the biggest pending issues that our country must resolve in favor of women with disabilities?

 There are still pending issues in terms of equality and opportunities in many areas for women with disabilities, since we find ourselves in a situation of greater vulnerability due to the multiple discriminations we suffer due to their gender and disability. We have less political participation and less access to employment than men with disabilities, in addition to suffering gender-based violence and abuse in a higher percentage than other women. To fight against this situation, it is necessary to empower these women so that they know their rights. It is necessary to guarantee equitable access to health services; implement public employment policies that take into account the equality of women based on gender and disability; 

4 In your opinion... What can we understand by female empowerment? 

I understand empowerment as the ability of women to increase their self-confidence, power and authority to be able to decide freely in all aspects that affect their lives. The way to achieve this is through the development of her capacities, offering her the necessary support to trace her life itinerary through the exercise and defense of her rights and the promotion of her autonomy and independence until they make it. 

5 Do you consider that in Mexico and the world the articles of the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities are fully complied with? 

We cannot make the visible invisible, not only is the full enjoyment of people's human rights violated, it also limits the social mobility of vulnerable groups. in the country these issues are not and have not been a state priority. It is still not possible to guarantee that people with disabilities can live independently and be included in society. Our reality is that Mexico continues to be an inaccessible country, without unifying criteria for access to public and private establishments and full access to public transportation. Most of the UN recommendations to the Mexican government remain unaddressed. 

Reviewing your career, in 2017 you represented our country with love in the first edition of Miss Wheelchair World, an international beauty pageant for women wheelchair users, without a doubt you marked a path and your legacy has generated respect and pride. in many people... 

6 What message would you give to a girl with a disability who sees in you an aspirational role model? 

Without a doubt, my representation in this event left me with a great social responsibility and I am proud that they can see me that way. As you start to become an inspiration, you have to be more courageous and try to challenge yourself in some way every day. 

The truth is that no one will be inspired by a pessimistic person, without aspirations to be better every day, but by a person who has a positive vision of things and has good virtues such as trust and integrity. And this does not mean that he does not have days or bad times and everything looks rosy. Life does not come with instructions on how we have to live it, but it depends on each one of us where we want to take our destiny. 

Over time, the organization of Miss Wheelchair World has set its sights on you to be the International Director of the institution and therefore, to be the person who heads the organization of the second edition to be held in Rosarito Baja California during the month October of the present 2022... 

7 What can the whole world expect from Mexico as the host country? Tell us about Rosarito Baja California!

 I am very grateful for the trust in me to lead this beautiful project from which I was selected in 2017 to represent my country. What can I tell you about Mexico, it is a country of warm, happy, friendly people, it is a culturally rich country. Very happy that my state of Baja California is part of this wonderful event and is opening the doors to such a prestigious event. The city of Rosarito and Tijuana will be part of the arrival of 26 women from different countries and there is much to offer! As a Baja Californian, I am proud to say that there is great ethnic, missionary, culinary, civic and tourist wealth in my state that deserves to be known and recognized by many people from other countries. 

In addition to the natural attractions that we cannot ignore, and thanks to this, they increasingly receive a large number of foreign and local visitors. 

8 What are the main values ​​of Miss Wheelchair World? 

Now all the positive aspects that allow us to live with other people in a fair way in order to achieve a global benefit as a society such as Friendship, responsibility, humility, empathy, gratitude and solidarity among many. 

9 Tell us about the accessibility conditions in the different settings that will be part of the Second Edition of Miss Wheelchair World, such as the Rosarito Beach Hotel and the Baja Center, venue of the final gala. 

Well, the search for accessibility in my state has not been an easy task at all, bringing a host event where what we seek is to provide comfort and also promote accessible tourism. We know that many countries in Latin America are facing the reality of infrastructure in terrible conditions. Without a doubt we have tried to find the most accessible to hold this event. Baja center I can tell you that this metropolitan center surprised me as it is fully accessible in every way, from bathrooms, ramps, elevators and parking lots. 

In the case of the hotel always very friendly, a spectacular view facing the sea and the reality is that not all rooms are accessible as it is in most hotels in the country, regularly there are only a few rooms provided for people with disability, and it is like in many public places. 

 Very grateful for the interest in creating the necessary adjustments in the environment to receive our candidates. They are in the best position to be part of this great event that will leave its mark and above all they are willing to promote and be part of inclusive tourism in Baja California. In addition, very happy with the reception and support of different institutes for the upcoming event to be held in October 2022. 

On December 3, International Women's Day, the 26 girls who will be part of this second edition were announced through the event's official platforms... 

10 Tell us a little about them! What message do you give to all of them? 

In truth, I am very happy with that attitude, security and empathy that each one of them radiates. They are exemplary women!

 The message that I can give you is that you enjoy each stage that you are doing to achieve your goal since each one will carry and represent the colors of your flag and that should be a source of pride for each person who steps on stage in an international event. In addition to taking away the friendship and appreciation of their companions, believe me, nothing compensates for that. 

I wish that you take an incredible experience of my country and that you are happy to be in this event. I know that each of them will take on a great mission to continue working for inclusion, promoting human rights to forge future generations of women who are stronger both physically and mentally. 

11 About the activities to be carried out in this second edition

 What can you share with us about it? 

Different activities will be carried out where the girls will be evaluated during the week, we will have cultural events, fashion and the rehearsal for the final gala. 

12 Will there be a qualifying committee or jury? If so, what will be the parameters to follow to choose the winning girl? 

Undoubtedly there will be several parameters that will define the finalist, since we are looking for a woman who can be the spokesperson for all women with disabilities, security goes hand in hand, having a good development of communication, being aware of their rights, be empathic, and above all responsible. 

Definitely the qualifying jury will have a difficult decision since all the girls are wonderful, but I am sure that they will be happy with the results and the achievements of each one and the finalist will have the support of all. 

If we look back at the first edition of Warsaw 2017, many of the participating girls transcended significantly in the world of fashion, activism, sports, philanthropy, the media and the defense of human rights... 

14 How has the media response been to the Second Edition of Miss Wheelchair World?

 I can tell you that we are doing very well, as soon as they know about the project they get excited and want to collaborate. Although we are just beginning in terms of dissemination in the media since we have been collaborating with different countries and magazines. You as the media are the ones who will help us give it projection and also set a new precedent on what is the inclusion of women with disabilities worldwide. 

Throughout the pandemic, institutions such as Fundación Once and the World Tourism Organization itself have pointed out that inclusion must be a value and learning in tourism around the world... 

15 What message would you give to the business community in Mexico? 

It is an excellent opportunity to sponsor an event of international stature with a high sense of social responsibility! 

Yes, Héctor, it is definitely a great opportunity for Mexican companies as well as companies from other countries to join this great project. Something very important is to highlight the companies that are committed to supporting and even employing people with disabilities. Your brand will be present on that day. In addition, let me tell you that there are more and more companies with a great sensitivity of support towards this sector as vulnerable as it is today in terms of work. 

Interestingly, many employers are afraid to hire people with disabilities due to certain social stereotypes, etc. But believe me that once they are hired they know the value of supporting someone who has struggled so much to get a job and the same person values ​​it so much that they give their best to be an excellent worker. 

Regarding precautions around the pandemic and its variants... 

16 What are the sanitary measures that will be taken during the development of the Second Edition? (Hotel, Baja Center, your staff of collaborators, the participating girls themselves)

 The measures that must be taken in each event that takes place today, now it is to obey the orders that are being implemented according to the traffic light that is at the moment. As for the Baja center, hotel Rosarito, we know that they have been holding events with great success for some time, even as a result of the pandemic. There are highly trained people on staff who will carry out preventive measures to take care of us all. 

17 What has been the response of the local authorities? 

It has been excellent, they are very excited about this international event and above all what we want to project through it. Soon you will see which institutes are joining the project and which media will be part of this second edition. 

That I am sure will leave a great encouraging message for all the people who are going through difficult times in their lives. For the general public interested in following the activities of the Second Edition of Miss Wheelchair World...
